3 Tips to Staying on Track in 2017
Statistics show that 43% of people give up on their new year’s resolution within the first month. We’ve all been there. It can be frustrating when you don’t see results but we often don’t give ourselves a good chance at success. You know the saying: “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail”. Here are 3 tips that will help you set goals and achieve success this year.
1. Be Specific. A common new year’s resolution is to get fit but what does getting fit mean to you? Is that losing 20 pounds by April or being able to run 10k by the end of summer? Your goals need to be specific and measurable so that you can track your progress over time. This means getting very detailed on times, measurements and numbers. Nothing should be vague.
2. Be Realistic. It’s easy to be eager for change but change takes time. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and potentially abandoning your program. If your goal is to lose weight, 30 pounds your first month is not realistic or healthy. Do your research and see what healthy timelines look like for someone at your fitness level. Goals should be challenging but not unattainable.
3. Have a Plan. What are the steps needed to achieve your goal? Put together a detailed schedule that is action oriented. Decide which days you will be working toward your goal and what exactly you will be doing. A long term plan might include working out once a week the first month and taking two classes. Next month, add a second workout and the next month add another class. If you don’t plan to mix it up, you may find yourself in a rut. You can always reassess the plan and make changes but by outlining what a whole year or specific number of months will look like you have something to follow. Same is true for the individual workout. You should always plan what you will be doing before going to the gym. This will maximize your gains and keep you on track.
Following these three key steps will help you set yourself up for success in achieving your goals. Be specific about your goals and plan accordingly but be flexible as well. Remember that injuries or illness will mean re-adjusting your timelines. It’s important to not be discouraged by minor set-backs and to continuously refer back to your plan.
