5 Steps to Healthy Detoxing

It seems that detoxes are all the rage these days. From special teas you drink 4 times a day to juice-only diets, everyone is looking for that magic bullet to achieve perfect health by removing toxins from our bodies. The reality is that most of us don't have the time or the money to follow these strict protocols. The other reality is that you actually don't have to do an extreme diet in order to get the benefits of a detox. There are several herbs and readily available foods you can use for a natural detox. Simply incorporate them into your existing diet and you’ll be doing your liver a huge favour by giving it that extra boost it needs to continue to be the detoxing powerhouse that it already is.

 

Lemon: lemon water is a great drink you can throw together in the morning to rehydrate, kick-start the digestive process and help cleanse the liver. Have a glass before your morning cup of coffee to really start your day off right.

 

Garlic: this amazing broad-spectrum anti-microbial can kill bacteria and fungus all while adding a ton of flavour to your food. If you notice you’re starting to feel a little under the weather add some fresh organic garlic to your diet. You can even swallow a crushed clove but be careful because this stuff is strong, and you will definitely feel it working in your stomach.

 

Parsley: this herb is great for general detox by working as a diuretic. It is especially great for the kidneys. Toss fresh parsley onto any pasta dish or top a soup or salad with it.

 

Miso: miso chelates heavy metals and discharges them from the body because it contains zybicolin. It also stimulates digestive juices and restores probiotics to the gut. Add a few scoops to a salad dressing, or make a quick light soup to sip on in the morning before breakfast: mix 1T miso with 1-2 cups of hot water and stir. Top with chopped green onion. Add other veggies and some protein for a complete meal.

 

Tea: there are some great herbal teas you can pick up at the health food store such as dandelion root or dandelion flower, nettle tea, and burdock tea. They all help with liver and/or kidney detox and when added to a healthy diet they are a great way to get an extra detoxification boost.

 

Try adding one or two of these into your daily routine and enjoy knowing that you’re helping your liver take care of your body naturally.
